ASINARA ISLAND: PART I

We took one of the greatest day trips of all time to Asinara, an island off the northwest corner of Sardinia.

The trip began with a beautiful, 1.5 hour ferry ride aboard the Sara D, from Porto Torres to Asinara Island (€20 roundtrip. Book via delcomar.it)

Asinara is as fascinating as it is visually stunning. From Neolithic times forward, it has been the stomping ground of Spaniards, Moors, and Ottomans, as well as a refuge for Camodolese monks. It has served as an agricultural work camp, leper colony, and maximum security prison. Today, it is a National Park and Protected Marine Area, and home to birds, aquatic life, wild boar, horses, and donkeys …

The ferry ride was magical with water like silk and dolphins jumping in our wake …
