BAILAR

Mexican people are masters of celebration. More specifically—they are experts at manifesting their joy through movement.  During Dia del Muertos weekend in Merida, we experienced a heady mix of colors, sounds and tastes, punctuated by the constant sway of dancers.  Memorial shrines cropped up in plazas and businesses, vendors peddled the shiny, the sweet and the savory and impromptu dance floors and bands materialized throughout the city. In the evening, beneath the glow of the cathedral’s amber lights, the main square filled with dance troupes, musicians, performers and revelers, the streets full to bursting. We found ourselves to be happy captives in the middle of it all—mesmerized by the seductive blur of shapes, colors and rhythms that spiraled tirelessly into the night.
