METEORA
We hopped on a train to Thessaly yesterday and this morning, biked up to Meteora—a group of monasteries built atop sandstone pillars originally inhabited by hermetic monks (some say as early as the 9th century) who navigated their heights with ropes and ladders. The monasteries flourished in Byzantine times, diminished in the 16th century, and eventually became abandoned. Six of the original 24 remain in use today.
